Assignment 1: 1. Marguerite Johnson: Marguerite changed her name to Maya Angelou. Maya is the main character and the story is told from her point of view as this is an autobiography. She is a very intelligent girl, though she often isolates herself and escapes into reading. Maya soon becomes an independent and wise woman. Bailey Johnson Jr. : Bailey is the older brother of Maya. He is older by a year. He is mature and intelligent like Maya. He tends to be protective and shows compassion towards his sister. He chooses to control his temper until the problem passes. Annie Henderson/Momma: Annie Henderson is the grandmother of Maya and Bailey. When she was raising Bailey and Maya, she was called Momma, as she raises the children under Christian values. She owns a store, which is the only store located in the town of Stamps, Arkansas. Vivian Baxter: Vivian Baxter is Bailey and Maya’s Mother. She a nursing degree but tends to tends to earn most of her money by working in gambling parlors. She also likes to gamble. Big Bailey Johnson: Big Bailey Johnson is Maya and Bailey’s father. He is selfish and stands out among other blacks because he speaks proper English and has flashy possessions. Big Bailey has no respect, never cared for, or connected with Maya. Uncle Willie Johnson: Willie Johnson is Momma’s son, who became impaired at the age of three. His right hand is larger than his left.
